It was a miracle and it uplifted hundreds of millions directly while supporting the liberation struggles of hundreds of millions more, and its collapse was the second greatest tragedy of the twentieth century behind WW2 and The Holocaust, causing over six million excess deaths to its former citizens and the largest peacetime drop in living conditions experienced by any society in history.
