I had originally posted this to Reddit but the mods removed it and suggested I take it to a rock and minerals subreddit… which was infuriating. Anyways, this came in a collection of other Mexican arts and pottery. I have not found anything exactly like it online. I actually have a pair of them. I thought it might be for tortillas but it seems small. It’s abou 4" across. Any help is appreciated.
I agree that the flat surface looks like a comal but it’s way too small. There’s no way that someone would ever want to use a comal that’s only 4". Tortillas take a few minutes to cook or even reheat. Heating a single tortilla at a time for a family, let alone a business, would be frustrating.
I don’t have any experience with cooking on stone but I would assume that it would leave some kind of discoloration.
Edit: It does resemble Texas Pink Granite so maybe there are similar rocks in Mexico near the Texas border.
