I actually have no good enough reason to switch to an app, the web app is more than good although text formatting doesn’t work probably using Firefox but it works using nu.lemdro.id which lacks the option to easily use and format text

I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong, but I’m using sync and I’m not seeing any ads at all.

    I also have DNS66 through f-droid though…

Not a big fan of the price, but it’s free to use if you want and the app is amazingly smooth.

Also, if you decide to use this app for many years, the one time payment isn’t that bad at all.

The $20 one-time fee is to remove ads from the “standard” app.

The subscription pricing is for Sync Ultra, which has Cloud backup for settings and some more advanced features in addition to no ads.

For whatever reason I can’t find the 20 option to remove ads. Any chance you can point me to it?

Edit: nvm, just had to update the app.

At this point there are multiple updates per day during the beta period. I expect that will settle down once things stabilize, but for now it’s definitely prudent to keep checking for updates.

More power to you if that’s how you feel, but I can’t imagine paying $100 for a mobile app. I won’t even pay $100 for a video game that I will put a thousand hours into, let alone an app to read content from a site.

There’s a one time payment for ad free. The subscription is for ultra which is ad free plus a bunch of power user type shit that I don’t personally have a use for.

Honestly, it’s so strange this never comes up - yes there are ads but a man’s gotta eat. The ads aren’t particularly intrusive so the free version is a fine sacrifice for those of us who are happy enough with the base functionality of sync and can deal with the minor annoyance of an occasional ad.

I’d prefer to purchase the ad-free version, but the pricing is a bit excessive for me right now - I can wait it out until there’s a sale or other discount in the meantime.

If that’s a dealbreaker, all the other Lemmy clients are available to use instead - I’ve used them all and they’re all excellent.

Also, somewhere between my pi-hole and various DNS tweakings the ads in the free version seem to be getting eaten anyway.

Here I am on jerboa wondering why it barely gets mentioned lol. It was all that was available in the first wave of migration and im used to it now. Sorta how I ended up on baconreader. Someone told me to try it, I had not used a 3rd party app before then (reddit didnt even have one at the time, the one they have now is steaming trash) and I got used to it and never looked for another. Until Jerboa isn’t doing what I need/want or begins to have functionality problems, I dont feel a need to change

Tbh, I don’t particularly enjoy the way it looks and when I used it there were a few quality of life things, like hiding read items. But could’ve changed now

Do you mean read posts or read mail? If you mean posts, I actually wouldn’t like that feature (for me). I like being able to find a post I found funny or pull up info for someone else, and seeing that it WAS read is helpful there

Posts. And iirc, it only hides them until you refresh.

I prefer it, because it allows me to explore and be exposed to more posts, especially if it is a slower day. I can just mark/favorite a post I found funny or interesting, which allows for faster searching anyway.

Fair enough! Jerboa currently functions similarly to baconreader (which is what I used to browse reddit) so it has been a very smooth transition. I might try out some of the other offerings over the next few months, but I doubt I will be clamoring or a switch until either I am not getting something I want from Jerboa, or someone tells me about a feature I would specifically like on another app

People also don’t have a lot of time outside of work, and have other hobbies /people that they want to spend time on/with. And it’s going to take under a year at most before they are able to make any meaningful contributions if they are learning to code for the first time.

And people who do know how to code most likely do it as a day job and don’t want to do any programming outside of it to avoid burnout.

There are a lot of legitimate reasons as to why people can’t always contribute.

FOSS is eventually the better option, but that is a long wait.

Get off your ass and help (or learn) instead of complain. It’s open source, so many resources. Better than (edit: yeah) supporting ads (or paying to get them removed which is still supporting ads).

For myself and my SO, almost everything. My feeds don’t load until I refresh them 3/4x, comments disappear and reappear randomly, voting is a shot in the dark. It’s made Lemmy pretty much useless for me. It seems like every other day or so it randomly signs me out, and it’s a crap shoot as to whether I can sign back in without reinstalling.

SO can’t comment, period. He’s uninstalled/reinstalled, cleared cache, logged in and out a thousand times… Jerboa just will not let him comment. He also cannot load any feeds unless Jerboa feels like it. Overall a miserable experience.

I’ve had zero issues with Sync so far 🤷‍♀️

I also have been using Jerboa since joining Lemmy and have not come across a single issue personally. I’m trying Sync now but I haven’t seen anything yet that sets it apart drastically from Jerboa so will probably stick with what I have been using.

It crashes when you open more comments. It crashes if you open some link types. It simply downloads the image if you click certain links. It gives weird errors regularly. It just doesn’t look very polished.

It’s a fine app, and it’s free, and it existed when Sync didn’t, but…

I’ve ran into these issues before, but not on the current version. It has been getting a lot of updates lately. It’s gone from version 0.36 up to 0.41 in just the last couple weeks. It’s better than Lemmur, the only other Lemmy app currently available on F-droid. I know apps outside of f-droid exist, but I’m a simple, FOSS man.

I’m not who you were talking to but instead the guy who suggested Jerboa in the first place. Jerboa has improved a lot just in the last month or so since reddit closed 3rd party apps. Currently my only real problems with Jerboa is that it doesn’t play well with AOSP keyboards and if your instance is down and you try to log in, it will change your username to anonymous. And, basically you have to log back in (once your instance is working again). The log back in thing can be annoying since I apparently didn’t choose the most stable instance. (I’ve got alternate accounts now for that.)

I’ve downloaded all the available Lemmy apps I could find

They all work better than the official Reddit app. I know it’s a low bar to clear, but some of them have barely been out for two months and are in alpha/beta stages.

The only big issues I’ve run into are instance related because of those asshole ddos’ers

Other open source apps to shout out:

      liftoff

      Thunder

Infinity (Currently using to type this)

There’s also Slide, but it’s pre alpha I think. Not totally ready for normal wear and tear

I’ll repeat what I said in several other threads at this point:

I loved the old app, I still love the new app, it’s a pleasure to use compared to the alternatives I’ve tried, and I find the ultra subscription rate both reasonable and worthwhile to support a product I truly enjoy.

Sync is good for me. There’s plenty of other options if it’s not good for you.

I think the bigger issue is that you can’t afford a $20 one time fee for a highly polished app that will get a massive amount of usage. I know it’s a tough economy but $20 isn’t a crazy amount of money.
