I got harassed by loons and shitheads for a poker related post. It’s no exaggeration when people call out Twitter as a cesspool that shouldn’t be financially supported by any business or individual.

I left and deleted my account after Elon changed the algorithm to show nothing but his posts. With this decision and the many other bad decisions he’s made since buying Twitter, I’m glad I left and I frankly don’t miss it.
This will absolutely be abused and people will be harassed, but I feel this is intentional as he continues turning Twitter into a far-right echo chamber.
You could always just mute users you’re not interested in

Stop using Twitter. Seriously, people, stop using Twitter. It’s not going to get better.
I get that many people don’t like it and has left but I still haven’t figured out why non-twitter users are urging the rest of us to leave the platform. What do you care? Really
It seems obvious to me. Twitter has historically been used by public figures, and especially public institutions like local governments, transit agencies, etc, to make official announcements & statements. Of course having that on a centrally owned social media site was never good, but now with Space Karen making it actively hostile to users (and trying to prevent logged out users from seeing that info), it’s very bad. The sooner Twitter completes its inevitable collapse, the sooner those public figures & institutions will move to a better way to deliver those - Mastodon, RSS, webpages, whatever.
IMO it’s in the public’s best interest for all the holdouts to get out now so we can move on.
What if I hang in the art community and none of that has zero relevance to me?
I mean you still get served the ads that provide them revenue. But it’s not like I’m assigning you personal responsibility for keeping them in business, or saying you’re wrong or bad for staying. Just sharing why I want people to get off the platform quicker.

Most Japanese artists have a Pixiv or Nijie account. You should be able to move most of your follows to those services.
A lot are also jumping ship to misskey.io, which you can follow if you use mastodon/pleroma/misskey/etc.
I suspect the small amount of holdouts will soon create an alternative as well.

We all used to have to hear about it because of politics and celebrities, now we have to hear about it because of Musk antics.
Why do people even use twitter-like platforms? Like what’s so good about following users instead of communities? Like I don’t want to hear about tech from a Linus Sebastian, I want to hear about it from a community of people interested in technology.
That’s why I never even liked twitter nor the fediverse alternative, Mastodon. It doesn’t really make sense to me.
Because some people are good at what they do. In online communities you often have people talking out of their ass. It’s interesting hearing what experts in certain topics have to say. Also not to mention following friends and family. Not sure what’s hard to understand there.

I don’t have a Twitter account but I use rss through nitter. It’s useful depending on the account like if you just want to be updated on the progress of some video game mod for instance, which can take years to complete. So it’s useful for project updates over manually going to like nexusmods or moddb.
As for why people use Twitter. That’s a easy one. It’s a good platform for self promotion and advertising. It’s less a platform for discussions, and more useful tool for getting exposure. It’s why Mastodon is not appealing as Twitter to individuals who use it, since it’s not for ideological reasons that they use something like Twitter but how many eyeballs they can get to view their content.

Getting attention in *communities* as a single entity or (self)claimed *authority* is probably more difficult than in *users*-based streams.
I never understood it either.
But now I’m on kbin and can interact with mastodon I follow a few of them that I see in my magazine. There seem to be a lot of scientists posting stuff like sea ice updates.
This is what I like about the fediverse. A larger pool to draw from and I make the decisions on what to block for me alone.
As I’ve never hatd a Twitter/X account, could someone tell me what a “DM” is in that context?

I killed mine the day he unbanned the orange moron. Like, I knew it was going to be a shitshow once Musk got his hands on it within weeks of having it. Soon as he did that unbanning though, I was out.
I knew the ship was sinking but I stayed around until the name change to X because official and then I bounced. Made it here after Reddit and twitter made more recent bad decisions.

Both app stores require a block feature?
I can’t speak for Apple but Google does. It falls under their user-generated content policy which requires you to “Provides an in-app system for blocking UGC and users”. Google is generally the more lenient of the two when it comes to policies, so I’d be highly surprised if Apple didn’t have it…
Apple too requires mechanisms to block stalkers from what I saw on Mastodon.
